ICO Spotlight: Interview with Eddy Smith from Neblio

This post is part of the ICO Spotlight, a series of posts with the teams behind the different projects covered by Coinschedule.

Hello Ed. Please tell us: What is Neblio?

Hey Majid, thanks for reaching out to learn more about Neblio. Neblio is a blockchain platform targeting the business and enterprise markets. We are building open-source tools, APIs and services that will enable large enterprise users to simplify and accelerate the development and deployment of distributed applications on the Neblio network. Distributed applications built on our platform will store and retrieve information on the Neblio blockchain and/or its side chains via a set of intuitively designed APIs spanning nearly all of today’s popular programming languages. We believe that the future of applications in the data center will be based on blockchain technology, and we are building the tools to help companies accelerate that adoption.

Where does the name come from?

A question no one has asked before! When trying to come up with a name for our project Ann and I had 3 criteria. 1) It had to in some way, even if only loosely, tie back to something having to do with blockchain, large decentralized networks, or our enterprise focus. 2) We wanted it to be short and catchy. 3) The domain name had to be available or reasonably priced. Neblio is a twist on the word Nebula, an interstellar cloud of dust and ionized gasses that is often millions of light years in diameter. I enjoy astronomy as a hobby and when I think of a vast decentralized network of nodes that spans the globe, something similar to a nebula comes to mind. We morphed the word into a shortened version that conveniently was available as a .io domain name and Neblio was born!

So you are aiming the enterprise user, right? What do you think are the main challenges for enterprise adoption of blockchain?

Correct. The main inhibitor preventing large businesses and enterprise customers is the complexity and immaturity of the limited solutions currently available. Do customers use an existing blockchain or build their own fork? Do customers integrate blockchain technology with their existing applications or replace legacy applications with new distributed applications built for blockchain? Many customers are not able to answer these questions on their own and need a partner to guide and enable their transition to blockchain based solutions that will drive real value for their business.

A recent survey found that 61% of senior executives at large US companies have knowledge of blockchain technology. 42% of those executives believe that blockchain will be disruptive in their industry and 55% believe it will put them at a competitive disadvantage if they do not adopt it. 28% of respondents stated their companies have already invested millions into blockchain solutions while another 25% plan to do so in the next calendar year. Companies are looking for ways to integrate the technology to gain an advantage and we are going to make it easier for them to do so.

How do you plan to create an ecosystem around Neblio?

Through the combination of the Neblio API Suite, Blockchain Consoluting Services, managed Neblio Node Deployment & Hosting, and our Private Blockchain Development offering we are building a one-stop-shop for everything clients need to successfully drive business value from the deployment blockchain technology in their data center.

Using the Neblio Blockchain platform will allow customers and clients the ability to rapidly develop and deploy distributed applications due to the intuitive RESTful Neblio API Suite that removes much of the complexity surrounding blockchain applications. Developers that are familiar with modern RESTful APIs will be able to quickly and easily develop distributed applications that store and access information on the Neblio blockchain or its side chains. Further simplification is available to clients by letting us host and mange their Neblio nodes, through consulting services, or through development of customized private blockchains suited to the client’s needs.

What can you tell us about your team? How do you plan to expand it?

Right now our small team consists of myself (Eddy Smith) and my co-founder Ann Jackson. Between the two of us we have over 15 years of experience in the tech industry working for some of the largest companies in the world. I on the dev side of things, and her on the business and operations side of things. Years of experience working for the companies that are in our target market give us a breadth of knowledge and contacts that give us a leg up over the competition when it comes to writing new requirements, features, and our go to market strategy.
We plan to build out the team aggressively in the rest of Q3 and into Q4. We are openly hiring for both development and business operations positions and have received many resumes that we will review over the next several weeks and start setting up meetings with potential hires. We are very small right now, but have achieved a lot for our size over the past months working on the project in stealth. Additional team members that share our vision will help to accelerate that growth. You can find more about Ann and I, including our LinkedIn profiles and a video we shot for everyone, and our new team members as they are hired at https://nebl.io/about

Thank you so much Ed and good luck with your ICO!
